Statement of the ICCBA regarding the Death of Dragoslav Ognjanović

The ICCBA has issued the following statement on the death of Dragoslav Ognjanović:

The International Criminal Court Bar Association (ICCBA) is highly concerned to hear about the recent murder of Dragoslav Ognjanović, a Serbian lawyer who was shot outside his home in Belgrade on 28 July 2018. Dragoslav Ognjanović was a defence lawyer, who had formerly represented Slobodan Milošević at the UN International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague and subsequently practised as a lawyer in Serbia.

On behalf of all members, the ICCBA sends its condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.

The ICCBA shares the concerns raised by the Association of Defence Counsel practising before the International Courts and Tribunals (ADC-ICT) and strongly condemns the killing of Mr. Ognjanović. If the investigation reveals that he has been targeted because of his activities as a lawyer then the murder constitutes an attack on lawyers worldwide and renders the crime particularly egregious and cannot be tolerated.

The ICCBA also joins the request of the bar of Serbia and bar of Belgrade that the Serbian authorities seek the perpetrators of this abhorrent crime and bring them to justice as soon as possible.
