On 6 February 2019, the ICCBA welcomed Indian film icons R. Sarathkumar and Raadhika Sarathkumar to the ICC. The visit of R. Sarathkumar, President of the All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi party and a former member of the Indian parliament, and Raadhika, founder of the production house Radaan Mediaworks, came at the invitation of Honorary ICCBA President and Executive Council member Karim Khan QC and Executive Council and Victims Committee member Dato’ Shyamala Alagendra.
R. Sarathkumar and Raadhika, who have long been involved in human rights and social justice causes, were greeted by ICCBA Secretary and Defence Committee member Xavier-Jean Keïita, who extended the best wishes of the ICCBA President Chief Charles Taku to the couple, on behalf of the ICCBA’s membership. Mr. Keita, along with Anand Shah (Chair, Amicus Committee) and Michael Herz (Chair, Counsel Support Staff Committee), briefed the couple on the mandate and work of the ICCBA, including the ICCBA’s initiatives to build support for the Rome Statute framework around the world. In his capacity as Principal Counsel of the Office of Public Counsel for the Defence (OPCD), Mr. Keita also provided a brief overview of the history of the Court and the mandate and work of the OPCD.
ICC staff members were also invited to meet with the couple.
Raadhika and R. Sarathkumar expressed their strong backing for the universal goals of the Rome Statute. The couple stated that they drew inspiration from their visits and discussions at the ICC, as well as their visit earlier in the day to the International Court of Justice, and that the mandate and work of these international bodies to protect and promote human rights and the rule of law should be applauded and supported.
Following their meeting with the ICCBA, R. Sarathkumar and Raadhika were received by the President of the ICC, H.E. Judge Chile Eboe-Osuji, in his office.
