About the event
Attacks on the independence of the judiciary is said to undermine one of the foundational pillars of any legal system: the rule of law. Whether these attacks occur at the domestic or international level, they are said to weaken institutional legitimacy, compromise justice, erode public trust and the protection of/or the rights of individuals. Some however argue that judicial decisions including at the international level cannot be immune from legitimate scrutiny and criticism.
This ICCBA event seeks to explore the growing risks and challenges to the independence of the judiciary, and the rules based international order in a global context. It aims to foster a dialogue on: the origins of the current situation; the emerging threats and drawing on lessons learned or initiatives, including from domestic jurisdictions, the panel event will seek to explore strategies and solutions that may inform responses to contemporary attacks on judicial independence and the rule…
